About Society of Humane Friends of Georgia

Picture
Society of Humane Friends of Georgia is an animal rescue group that has a licensed shelter in Lawrenceville, GA. SOHFGA was incorporated in early 1998 and is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit.  We accept cats and dogs on a space available basis from other shelters such as Gwinnett County Animal Control, owners who can no longer keep them, and found strays.  We foster the animals in our members' homes.

All animals are fully vetted (including spay or neuter, heartworm or FIV/FeLK testing, and vaccinations) before they are offered for adoption.  Potential adopters are carefully screened to ensure a good match of family and pet.

We host our adoptions at the Petco on Highway 124 in Snellville, GA. We gratefully accept donations to help us help the animals.

One reason a large number of dogs and cats are killed every day in our animal control shelters is because owners do not spay/neuter their pets. There are not enough good homes for all the unwanted litters of puppies and kittens and the abandoned dogs and cats that are brought to the shelters every day. SOHFGA runs a spay/neuter clinic at Gwinnett County's Animal Welfare and Enforcement facility for shelter animals. Our goal is to see that all animals are spay/neutered before they leave the shelter. We also run a low cost spay/neuter clinic for the general public.

In February of 2010, SOHFGA in partnership with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department started Operation Second Chance - Jail Dogs. Please visit www.jaildogs.org for more information on this innovative program.

We have just launched our outreach, Gwinnett Community Pet Project. We will visit local underserved communities, offer free services including vaccinations and spay/neuter, and work to educate pet owners about responsible ownership practices. Donations and volunteers are needed!
